For Want of a Nail…
August 29, 2012 4 Comments
For want of a nail the shoe was lost.
For want of a shoe the horse was lost.
For want of a horse the rider was lost.
For want of a rider the message was lost.
For want of a message the battle was lost.
For want of a battle the kingdom was lost.
And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.

Fr. Z coincidentally(?) posted this proverb on a recent article on his blog:

No coincident, you are right. I saw and was reminded of the proverb while reading the posting on the Abp who picked up a DUI. Thought I’d repost (the proverb). Most observant of you…
There are smear stories going around, saying that this incident shows that he has an alcohol problem.
What ACTUALLY happened was that he drove to his mother’s house for dinner, and she insisted that he have more wine (than he usually does). The incident happened on his way back from dinner.
I do not seek to excuse the archbishop: driving under the influence of alcohol is a very grave offence (and know people whose lives have been blighted as a consequence of drunk-drivers). However, what we have here is one single, shocking loss of good judgement – and not the long-running scandal that some are trying to portray it as.
Smear stories no doubt coming in from New Sodom and Gomorrah.
