Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan knows that the New Yorkers at his daily Masses in St. Patrick’s Cathedral are pressed for time, so he makes sure his Masses are reverent but his sermons are brief. I think this 38-second clip should be shown in every parish where daily Mass clocks in at 45 minutes or more.
Daily Masses that are too long may discourage attendance, the soon-to-be cardinal says, adding, “Every Mass doesn’t have to be the Easter vigil.” Amen.

At least someone has the guts (and convictions of faith) to say something!
Archbishop Timothy Dolan lashed out at the “stampede” to legalize gay marriage yesterday, even as a second Republican lawmaker flipped and brought the proposal within one vote of passage.
The state’s top Catholic leader in his weekly online column compared Gov. Cuomo’s campaign to make New York the sixth and largest state to allow gay nuptials to some communist regimes’ efforts to supplant God’s “undeniable truth” with a “chic cause.”
“Last time I consulted an atlas, it is clear we are living in New York, in the United States of America — not in China or North Korea,” said Dolan, who also leads the US Conference of Catholic Bishops.“God, not Albany, has settled the definition of marriage a long time ago.”…
Firefighters save historic Manhattan church St. James the Apostle.
NY Daily News reports:
Firefighters saved a historic Manhattan church from ruin after a two-alarm fire broke out in the attic Monday.
“We were able to contain the fire and save the building,” said FDNY Chief John Sarrocco.
Firefighters had to cut a hole in the roof of the 183-year-old Church of St. James the Apostle on James St. in lower Manhattan to fight the blaze.
The second-oldest Catholic church in Manhattan, St. James was landmarked by the city in 1966.
Archbishop Timothy Dolan and Buildings Department officials were on scene assessing the damage yesterday.
“We’re looking to see what the status is and what the needs are for the future of the church,” said Joseph Zwilling, spokesman for the Archdiocese of New York.
The fire broke out around noon and took just under 90 minutes to control, officials said. No one was injured and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
There is a short video here.
And this telling quote attributed to Archbishop Timothy Dolan:
“This has to be one of the few times I was grateful the church was empty,” Dolan said while thanking firefighters who had rushed to the landmarked, pillared church to put out the blaze.
