Prayer Request – Fr John Hunwicke

He blogs over at Fr Hunwicke’s Liturgical Notes.

In an e-mail received from Dr William Tighe during the night:

Friends,

Coming across an online report that Fr John Hunwicke had been severely injured in an accident in Rome, I rang him up, and his wife confirmed the report.  On Monday, October 29, on the third day of a long-planned trip to Rome, he fell down the stairs of St. Peter’s Basilica, shattering his left humeral bone.  He has undergone “reconstrcttive surgery” (and may have more), and is heavily sedated and in a good deal of pain.  His 71st birthday will be in early December. and his healing will take quite some time.

Fr John Hunwicke Ordained in Oxford

Fr Christopher George Phillips reports:

It’s with great joy and thanksgiving that we receive the news of the priestly ordination of Fr. John Hunwicke for service in the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham.  Fr. Hunwicke was a guest of our parish this past year, and he is one of the truly great priests coming into full Catholic communion from Anglicanism.

As is noted on his blog, Fr. Hunwicke “was for nearly three decades at Lancing College; where he taught Latin and Greek language and literature, was Head of Theology, and Assistant Chaplain. He has served three curacies, been a Parish Priest, and Senior Research Fellow at Pusey House in Oxford.”

And now, a Catholic priest in full communion with the Holy See!

Ordination and First Masses of John Hunwicke

Fr Tim Finigan notes:

Many of us have been looking forward eagerly to John Hunwicke’s priestly ordination. Deo gratias this will be taking place next week on Wednesday 27 June at 7pm at the Oxford Oratory. I will be assisting at the Mass and one or two of my parishioners are going. Everyone is welcome so if you are in the area, do come.

Here, from Fr Hunwicke’s Liturgical Notes is a further announcement:

Please come … if you are able … to the event mentioned in the previous post, in Oxford this coming Wednesday, June 27.

I ALSO ANNOUNCE that, Deo volente, I plan to celebrate

First Mass in the Extraordinary Form; London at the Brompton Oratory. Low Mass, Thursday June 28, 11.30; by kind permission of the Provost.

First Mass in the Ordinary Form; Oxford in the Church of the Holy Rood. Solemn Vigil Mass of Sunday, Saturday June 30, 6.00, by kind permission of Fr Paul King and Mgr Andrew Burnham. I plan also to preach.

Please! I would love to see as many friends, whether or not we have met in the flesh, as possible.

By the way (and I was corrected on this myself by a friend of Fr Hunwicke) if you have only so far met him virtually, the name is pronounced “Hunnick”, the w being silent.

Rev (Fr-soon-to-be) John Hunwicke

Fr Gerard sent in the news via e-mail:

I thought you might like to know that John Hunwicke will be ordained priest on 7pm om Wednesday, June 27th at the Oxford Oratory

On his blog, Fr Hunwicke’s Liturgical Notes, he writes himself:

I trust, Deo volente, to be admitted to the Presbyterate of the Ordinariate of our Lady of Walsingham on Wednesday June 27, at 7.00, in the Oxford Oratory Church. It would help if priests willing to take part in the Laying On of Hands could let me know. I would be pleased if there were many.

The Event Calendar of the Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham notes the other Ordination dates.

(Fr) John Hunwicke News

UPDATE:  His Ordination to the Priesthood here.

On his blog, which makes a low rumble… Hopefully indicating that blogging there will eventually resume, once he is Ordained.

I have just heard that the Holy Father has signed the Dispensation from Celibacy, which means that, Deo Volente, I shall take part in the Deaconing Service on May 26, 10.00 in Westminster Cathedral. There is no time arranged yet for the Priesting.

I am extremely grateful to the very many dear friends, both those I have met in the flesh and those with whom I have communicated over the airwaves, people all over the world, who have kept me in their prayers and assured me constantly of their affection and esteem.

Blessing and prayers to him.

HT:  Dr William Tighe, Stuart Koehl and Fr Christopher Phillips.

Leading ex-Anglican Scholar to be Ordained a Catholic Priest

The list of Candidates for Ordination to the Priesthood in the Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham was posted here. Don Henri provided us with a helpful updated list here with their Church body of origin.

Many commentators noted the name Fr John Hunwicke.  So did the Catholic Priest:

Former Anglo-Catholic blogger John Hunwicke is among 21 men to be ordained priests for the ordinariate this year.

Mr Hunwicke, a former Anglican priest and Senior Research Fellow at Pusey House, Oxford, stopped his influential blog last June, saying his ordination had been “deferred” because of a misunderstanding over the blog’s content.

The full list of candidates for the priesthood has been published on the website of the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham.

Their ordinations will bring the number of ordinariate priests to about 80.

Good for him.

I hope he can now get back to blogging soon.
