On flesh eating bacteria grafted into the skins of bananas.

Really, the amount of hoax e-mails doing the rounds these day:
Please don’t eat bananas for the next 3 weeks
Several deliveries of bananas from uvongo kwa-zulu natal south africa have been infected with necrotizing fasciltis, otherwise known as flesh eating bacteria.
Recently this disease has decimated the monkey population in the south coast.
We are now just learning that the disease has been able to graft itself to the skin of fruits in the region, most notably the banana which is one of south africa’s largest exports.
Until this finding scientists were not sure how the infection was being transmitted.
It is advised not to purchase bananas for the next three weeks!!!
If you have eaten a banana in the last 2-3 days and come down with a fever followed by a skin infection seek MEDICAL ATTENTION!!!
The skin infection from necrotizing fasciitis is very painful and eats two to three centimeters of flesh per hour.
Amputation is likely, death is possible..
If you are more than an hour from a medical center burning the flesh ahead of the infected area is advised to help slow the spread of the infection.
The FDA has been reluctant to issue a country wide warning because of fear of a nationwide panic.
They have secretly admitted that they feel upwards of 15,000 South Africans will be affected by this but that these are “Acceptable numbers”.
Please forward this to as many of people you care about as possible as we do not feel 15,000 people is an acceptable number!!
Clearly people, this is a hoax, so for goodness please stop forwarding the nonsense (especially to me).
This e-mail seems to have first started in the USA some 12 years ago. Back then, it was Costa Rican bananas that were the ones in question. But if you don’t believe me, do take note that even the Kwazulu-Natal Agricultural Union has released a statement rubbishing the claims:
… the article maintains that this bacteria has decimated the monkey population on the South Coast which is a completely false as anyone will tell you on the south coast that the monkey population is flourishing….
… We as members of the banana growers association strongly condemn this false article which can have and has already had negative publicity for the banana growers in Kwa-Zulu Natal and would like to assure the banana eating public that there is no truth in this article and that eating bananas holds no health risk at all. The article has the potential to threaten the livelihood of banana growers in KZN and their staff who are reliant on employment in the banana sector
We would also like to ask the public to please let us know who the person was that started spreading this article as we as the Kwa-Zulu Natal banana growers association are considering legal action against the individual.
See: The monkeys are doing well, and so will you, if you eat your bananas!
