Homosexuals More Likely to Get Cancer

Gay men in California are nearly twice as likely to report a cancer diagnosis as straight men in the state, according to new research published online Monday in the medical journal Cancer.

Few cancer studies investigate how sexual orientation might affect cancer risk and survivorship, often because study participants are not asked about their sexual orientation. In Monday’s study, researchers used a large health survey conducted by the state of California – in which respondents were asked about their orientation – to examine the impact cancer may be having on gays and lesbians in the state.

The results show about 8% of gay men had experienced a cancer diagnosis, compared with only about 5% of straight men. Among straight women and lesbians, the cancer prevalence trends were more closely matched.

Researchers speculate the increased cancer prevalence among gay men is associated with HIV status.

“There’s a higher prevalence of HIV positive men in the gay population, and we know that being HIV positive is related to cancers, so this might drive the differences we found,” said study author Ulrike Boehmer, an associate professor at Boston University School of Public Health.

Anal cancer, lung cancer, testicular cancer and Hodgkin’s lymphoma are more prevalent among men who are HIV positive, Boehmer said.

The study found gay men were also more likely to get cancer at a younger age than straight men – almost 10 years sooner – at the age of 41, on average…

Pastor Shoots 13-Year-Old Boy

The teen threw a rock at the Pastor’s car:

An Atlanta pastor was arrested Saturday after police said he shot a 13-year-old boy in the hip for shattering the back of his windshield with a rock.

Atlanta police charged Mr. Alex Williams with aggravated assault in the incident that happened about 7:30 p.m. near the intersection of Stephens and McDaniel streets, spokeswoman Ms. Kim Jones said.

The boy was throwing rocks at passing cars, Ms. Jones said.

“One of the rocks struck the back windshield of Alex Williams vehicle,” Ms. Jones said. “The windshield was shattered.

“Mr. Williams got out of his vehicle with a handgun and shot the teenager in the hip,” she said.

Police arrested Mr. Williams on the scene without incident. Mr. Williams is the pastor of the Mechanicsville United Church of God in Christ on McDaniel Street.

Emergency workers transported the boy to a local hospital where he was listed in stable condition…

We Shall Find Solace in Building the Land and the People, in Striving for Days of Peace…

Arutz Sheva reports:

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, speaking on the eve of Israel’s Memorial Day for Fallen Soldiers and Terrorism Victims, quotes the Bible to the effect that working to build Israel is the country’s solace for those killed.

Ammunition Hill, where a battle raged on the second day of the Six Day War in 1967, which concluded with all of Jerusalem and the rest of Israel being united for the first time in 2,000 years.

The Ammunition Hill battle raged 10 hours. “The enemy had been beaten, the hill captured, but the price we paid was heavy – 21 of our best soldiers from the Paratroopers Brigade fell in that bloody fight here,” said the Prime Minister.

Quoting from the Book of Jeremiah (31:16), the Prime Minister stated, “Our grief is overwhelming, our hearts ache, where will we find comfort? The prophet said: ‘Refrain thy voice from weeping, and thine eyes from tears; for thy work shall be rewarded.’”

“We shall find solace in building the land and the people, in striving for days of peace…

Wow! Powerful words.

… none of this would have happened if not for the young men and women who sacrificed their lives to ensure our existence…

“They would see that a huge earthquake shook the Middle East region in the past year…. But as the days go by, one thing is becoming clear – Israel is an island of freedom, democracy and progress in a vast, important swath of land.”

The whole piece is here.

Strangely though, no mention of the role of nor reliance on G-d?

Icon Smuggling Ring Uncovered

Scotland Yard has identified the alleged mastermind behind a ring that has been stealing religious icons from churches and monasteries in Epirus and Thessaly which subsequently ended up at European auction houses.

According to the Greek authorities, police in Athens were informed of the identity of the mastermind, who is from Thessaly, by their British counterparts. The person has yet to be taken into custody, however, as his or her whereabouts are currently unknown.

The information that led to the ring leader’s identification was provided by a London gallery following the online identification of six Byzantine icons that the gallery was planning to sell. The icons were recently returned to the monasteries they belong to in the area of Ioannina, northern Greece. It is believed that the alleged ring leader had claimed the icons were family heirlooms from his father’s personal collection.

Besides the aforementioned relics, the London gallery has also handed over another 10 icons to the Greek Embassy in the British capital which have also been identified through photographs as having been stolen from monasteries in Epirus and Western Macedonia. Meanwhile, the gallery has removed another 60 icons from its Internet site that had been heading for auction and had been supplied by the illicit Greek dealer.

It appears, however, that the smuggling ring had been supplying various art spaces around Europe. Another nine Byzantine icons, all taken from churches and monasteries in Epirus and Grevena, were identified and seized at two auction houses based in Amsterdam.

The international search for the icons began after an electronic database of stolen Byzantine treasures was posted online by the former Ioannina prefecture.

Initially, Greek police located a number of works at secondhand stores in Athens, before extensive investigation in collaboration with Interpol led them to Berlin, London and Amsterdam.

According to sources, the police are confident that the information they have gathered will help them to smash the ring, which is believed to be behind the disappearance of hundreds of Byzantine icons and other religious objects, including pieces of icon screens and communion cups.

The above was here.

Glad they have been caught!
