Pope Francis: I Want to Get Rid of Clericalism

Pope Francis Indian Headdress

I want to tell you something. What is it that I expect as a consequence of World Youth Day? I want a mess. We knew that in Rio there would be great disorder, but I want trouble in the dioceses!” he said, speaking off the cuff in his native Spanish. “I want to see the church get closer to the people. I want to get rid of clericalism, the mundane, this closing ourselves off within ourselves, in our parishes, schools or structures. Because these need to get out!”

  1. Hurrah a warning call to all the ;lasy priests we have……simple life style and get out evangelizing and viisting etc

  2. To get rid of “clericalism”, one must get rid of the mere “clerics”! And boy howdy the whole of the ecclesiastical church/churches is full of them! (Both Catholic & Protestant) Note in the OT the difference between “priest” and “prophet”! (Jer. 19: 1, etc.) And we have most certainly lost much of the spirit of the “prophetic” (to proclaim the “kerygma”) in the so-called gospel ministry today! Oh indeed the Book of Jeremiah is needed again today!

    1. The Holy Spirit Alone “alters the course…” but alas, the “man with a paddle” is the ‘Vicar of Christ’ on Earth with a ‘heart that enfolds an ocean of Souls’!

      1. Btw, Margaret, I am sure there are many that hate to see me here! Any “prophetic” type voice is never wanted by the traditional! Prophetic meaning the preaching voice. Though mine is always “feeble”, certainly!

      2. Fr. Robert: “hate” I think is too strong a word–from someone who might just disapprove…of your ‘prophetic preaching’; however, you are a ‘force to be reckoned with’ here…and that in itself would make you missed–by All!

      3. Thank you Margaret for the kind words, from you they mean something, as I value your spiritual person! Hopefully at least something of any “force” of mine is simply Christ, and the Spirit of Christ! May HE always receive the Glory due His Person and Name!
